Radical Islamist rebels are currently conquering cities in Syria at a record pace. The allies of Assad, namely Russia and Iran, can only watch without intervening. The success of this surprise offensive may be attributed to a possible deal with a third powerful player, Turkey.
The Assad government is facing one of its most significant crises since the start of the Syrian Civil War, appearing weaker than ever before. Even its allies are struggling to offer assistance as they typically would. Russia is preoccupied with the war in Ukraine, while Iran and its militias are focused on their conflicts with Israel in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Nobody can predict how events will unfold in Syria. The situation remains unpredictable. On Saturday evening, explosions and gunfire were reportedly heard near the general staff in Damascus. State television station Sana was no longer broadcasting.
Regardless of what the future holds for the country, Europe, particularly Germany, will face a new influx of refugees from Syria. This development is likely to exacerbate the ongoing migration crisis in Europe. Additionally, the spread of radical Islamism will further destabilize the region.
