Negotiations on the Plastic Agreement in Busan have stalled, with decisions postponed until next year.

Negotiations on the Plastic Agreement in Busan have stalled, with decisions postponed until next year. Despite years of preparation, the fifth round of the talks for a global plastic agreement did not conclude. Conference participants have decided to reconvene next year to discuss the agreement further. We find this approach unrealistic. Financial incentives for preventing plastic pollution must reach the end consumer, as they are the key decision-makers, not politicians or negotiators.

In 2019, approximately 460 million tons of plastic were produced worldwide, an average of around 14.586 tons per second. This staggering number should be considered the next time we dispose of a plastic bag after just one use or buy the 10th pair of sneakers.
